(CNSNews.com) - During an event at Texas A&M University on Monday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) claimed the Catholic Church has not enforced its teaching on contraception and that the church now wants the federal government to enforce that teaching for it.

“Ninety-eight percent of women in childbearing age that are Catholic use contraception. So, in practice the church has not enforced this and now they want the federal government and private insurance to enforce it. It just isn’t consistent to me,” Pelosi said.

The statement came after Pelosi was questioned about the conflict between the Catholic Church and the Obama administration over a regulation, set to take effect on Aug. 1, that will require all health-care plans in the United States to cover sterilizations, artificial contraceptives and abortifacients, and thus would force Catholic institutions and individuals, in complying with the Obmacare mandate to buy health insurance, to act against their consciences and the teachings of their faith.

2) In 2010 you said Solyndra, a company that donated heavily to your political campaign, was “leading the way toward a brighter and more prosperous future.” Today, Solyndra is bankrupt and the taxpayers lost over $500 million on loans that your administration knew might never be paid off when you made them. How do you respond to citizens who say this is evidence of corruption in your administration?

4) Through dubious means you and your Democrat allies in Congress managed to force through an incredibly unpopular health care bill that helped lead to the worst election night for the Democrat Party in 50 years. Since the bill has passed, many of your claims about the bill have proven to be untrue. For example, we now know the bill won’t lower health care costs and despite your assurances to the contrary, big companies like McDonald’s say they may drop health care because of the health care reform. Congress has exempted themselves from the health care reform and instead has their own taxpayer-funded premium health care plan. Many large companies (that donate to Democrat political campaigns) have received special exemptions from the health care plan. Since the majority of the American people have rejected your health care reform and it doesn’t do what you said it would, shouldn’t you work with the Republicans to repeal it?

9) You made bipartisanship one of the central themes of your campaign in 2008. Yet, you’ve worked to push bills through Congress with almost no Republican support, spent much less time negotiating with Congress than George Bush did, and you’ve said things like, “But, I don’t want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking. I want them to get out of the way so we can clean up the mess. I don’t mind cleaning up after them, but don’t do a lot of talking.” Why did you decide to break your campaign promise to pursue bipartisanship?

Liberals and the mainstream media have been denouncing a proposed ultrasound law in Virginia as akin to rape (Jon Stewart and Meghan McCain joined in the demagoguery last night). “[T]he law provides that women seeking an abortion in Virginia will be forcibly penetrated for no medical reason,” wrote Slate‘s Dahlia Lithwick. But as Alana Goodman reported yesterday, Planned Parenthood clinics already require ultrasounds prior to performing surgical and drug-induced abortions. Today, Steven Ertelt reports on a 2003 study that found 99% of abortion clinics perform an ultrasound prior to performing an abortion. If there is “no medical reason” for these ultrasounds, as Lithwick and friends contend, then why are Planned Parenthood and other abortionists requiring them?

Jeffrey Maxwell, the Corsicana man labeled “monstrous” and “inhuman” by a Parker County prosecutor, now awaits punishment.

Maxwell was found guilty Tuesday of savagely abducting a former neighbor and sexually torturing her for 12 days.

A Parker County jury took 52 minutes to convict Maxwell, 59, of one count of aggravated kidnapping and two counts of aggravated sexual assault.

The maximum sentence on each charge is life in prison.

The punishment phase is to begin this morning in 43rd District Court.

Before prosecutors rested their case Tuesday morning, Uyen Henson, a DNA expert with the Texas Department of Public Safety, testified that DNA from Maxwell and the woman were found on chains, locks, a whip and handcuffs found in Maxwell’s home and garage.

Maxwell’s attorneys, Richard Alley and James Wilson, presented no evidence or witnesses.

In future Republican presidential primaries, there should be no more debates with George Stephanopoulos or others in “the mainstream media” picking the questions. At least that’s what the editors of the National Review are now calling for.

“Not again,” the editors write in a piece posted online Wednesday morning. (RELATED: In debate, Santorum must prove electability)

“That’s the same media that daily carry water for the Obama administration, approach the tea parties as anthropological curiosities, and persistently skew the public discourse leftward in ways large and small, conscious and unconscious,” they write. “So why on earth should conservatives trust them to play any substantial role in the selection of our presidential standard-bearer?”

They write that “getting substantive answers requires moderators interested in asking substantive questions. And with few exceptions, few of the current lot have shown themselves to be up to the task.”

The editors make it clear they weren’t impressed with the debates of the 2012 cycle: “The semiotic search for the racism beneath Newt’s food-stamp line. The dismissal of ‘the Constitution’ in haughty air quotes. The wasting of primetime minutes pondering which wife would make the best first lady.
